This digital volume control has no pot to wear out and introduces almost no noise in the circuit. Instead, the volume is controlled by pressing UP and DOWN buttons. This simple circuit would be a great touch to any home audio project.

Parts

Part
Total Qty.
Description
Substitutions
C110.1uf Ceramic Disc Capacitor
U11DS1669 Digital Pot IC (See Notes)
S1, S22Momentary Push Button Switch
MISC1Board, Wire, Socket For U1

Notes

  1. U1 is available from Dallas Semiconductor.
  2. S1 turns the volume up, S2 turns it down.
  3. The input signal should not fall below -0.2 volts.
  4. Using a dual polariity power supply (+-5V works fine) will cure most clipping problems. You will have to check the data sheet for the correct pins to connect your voltages.

4. Using a dual polariity power supply (+-5V works fine).. The maximum voltage between 8.pin and 5.pin is 8V!

I thought to build an amplifier with an built in home made loudspeaker, so I thought I should use this volume control and the touch switch together with the amplifier:-)

Well I think the forum is down because it keeps freezing my browzer up. So i'll post here. Is this a quality IC or just a crapy one with lots of THD and poor control?

Hi There I am looking for a way to control the "Bride of Zen" pre-amp circuit so the I can replace the potentiometer at the end with a digital potentiometer or something similar. I would eventually want to control the volume via a microprocessor. Any ideas what I can do here. The voltage swing over the pot is 20V, and I find it hard to find digital pots that provide higher voltage support. Regards Jason
