I have received a number of emails requesting schematics for infa-red remotes. So here is one. This remote transmits a tone using an infa-red LED. This tone is decoded by the receiver. Since the receiver only switches when it "hears" the tone, there are no accidental activations.

This is the schematic of the IR Transmitter

Notes

  1. To adjust the circuit, hold down S1 while pointing LED1 at the receiver. Adjust R6 until you hear the relay click.
  2. You can increase range by using a high output LED for LED1.
  3. Bright light will stop the receiver from responding to the transmitter.
  4. There is an error in the schematic. There shuold be a 1 megaohm resistor between pin 3 of IC1 and ground. This provides a 0 volt reference to bias the IC.

Sine input & output to IC1 is capacitor coupled, there is no need for dual voltage supplies for the opamp. You can use single supply and ground, yes?

A lot of people have questions about possible replacements. The 2N2907 PNP can possibly be replaced by a 2N3906 or BC327. The LM308, try substituting TL081CN. If better precision is required on R6, try using a trim-pot instead. For the IR LED and Phototransistor, try radioshack.com, they sell a matched set at http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2049723 for $3.49

I set up the circuit for a small project and it worked very well. In order to function correctly, the reveiver needs to calibrated so as the Centre Frequency of the Tone Decoder, matches the frequency of the output of Pin 6 of the Op Amp. this is acheived by adjusting the Potentiometer to the required resistance (2.275K according to my calculations). if its difficult to set the Potentiomter exactly use a decade counter instead. The Frequencies have to be matched because the Tone Decoder purposefully has the characteristic of a high rejection ratio of intruder IR signals, ie TV Remotes. Also it is advisable to choose an IR Emitting Diode and Phototransistor that are strongly compatible with each other to acheive the best response time. The de-coupling electrolytic capacitors external to the Tone Decoder do not have to be the exact values stated, but as close as possible. Enjoy!

Could someone please help me? I am a beginner at this kind of stuff and i want to make 4 Chanel infrared remote control, depending on the components. Each device output can be configured to be momentary (turned on while you press the button) or latched. Latched outputs can be toggled on/off by one button per channel, or turned on and off by two buttons per channel. i have one 4 x 8 Chanel schematic for infa-red remote control but that its never responded. You can see that web site (Peter’s electronic projects) DIY remote control based on PIC help me with schematic related part.

Thanks for the great circuit. It worked after I did some tuning of my own.. First the 1 megaohm didnt work for me so I had to find a suitable resistor that worked. Also a precise resistance is required from the resistance pot to make it work.. But overall it worked great.. Thanks again.. Keep it up..

not working for me.. I used NTE3122 phototransistor.. 1 megaohm resistor between pin 3 of IC1 and ground.. tried with and without R6.. all the parts I used are the same as in the list except 2N2222, unfortunately I can't find them here in montreal so I tried PN2222 and 2N3904.. I don't know if the problem is from the transmitter or receiver.. but when I touch the phototransistor pins with a jumper, as soon as I release this jumper, the relay receive a pulse and it activate for a short time, but doesn't stay on.. I also tried many different IR leds on the transmitter..

Hi im trying to build a simple IR remote which sends a short pulse to a receiver, which in turn will send a signal to turn a motor. At the moment i have a debounced switch sending a signal to an IRED. I was then thinking to use a phototransistor (incorprated in a common emitter amplifier) to drive a motor. The circuit here look really good but is more complicated that i invisaged it would be. Can you tell me if there is some thing im missing? Thanks, kind regards. Tim

Hey I have been searching all over the web for lists of simple schematics, and I stumbled upon your website. I am trying to automate my room, and I need to be able to control many (something like 5-10?) things from one remote. Is there any way to adapt this model so that I dont have to build 10 of each the transmitter and the receiver? Please email me if you have any suggestions or if you already have the schematics. Thanks in advance.

(i think that if there is a high freq. the relay won't work properly, isn't it) what transistor should i use? how far can it work? a lot of thanks

Infa-Red LED circuit (Transmitter and Receiver)
Friday, September 14, 2007 2:37:34 AM
currently i m working on my final project. i want to construct a circuit consists of IR LED (Tx n Rx). i use 5v to activate the IR. so that Tx would transmit signal to Rx. i also use BJT ( NPN) and 3 resistors( 2 100ohms and a 220 ohms). from point Collector to ground, it supposed to have 5v . i already got that .the circuit also suppose to have a change in Voltage by the value of 5V will decrease whenever i block the Tx with a paper etc. but it didn't. could u please help me, perhaps provide me with a complete circuit.plz

There is a mistake in the notes section of the circuit. Connecting a 1 meg resistor between Pin3 and ground is going to pull the output of the IC to ground and make the circuit useless. The proper procedure is to create a voltage divider using two 100K resistors across the power supply and connect the centre tap of this to Pin 3 of the opamp, this way we can bias the IC to get half supply voltage at the output and to provide the maximum voltage swing. Also, abetter option would be to use a bistable circuit so that the circuit remains ON indefinitely until the transmitter sends another signal to switch it OFF.
