I have a large 4V battery (1350Ah and 320lbs) that I would like to use as a standalone power source in my garage. I have seen some DC-DC converters for $10 that will allow me to run a ~35 watt load but I would like to be able to use more like 300-400 watts.

What would be the best way to do this? I understand that adding more batteries to get the voltage up to 12V would be the easiest but that isn't an option.

Like most Chinese products on e-bay, the converter has no details. If its output is regulated then they cannot be paralleled.

Even if they could be paralleled, the maximum input is only 9A so ten would use 4V at 90A for an output power of only 360W.

My obvious lack of understanding has lead me to believe that if a small converter is possible, then so is a larger one. 150A does sound like a lot, but it is less than what would be going through a common 2000W inverter (12VDC to 120VAC). Is the difference because I want ~150A from DC to DC vs DC to AC?

To further steepen my learning curve, would it be possible to parallel 10 of these and then join their ouput to a single load http://www.ebay.com/itm/230958116923?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 or would that end really badly?

I asked him to make another thread as it's own topic.

But that doesn't change the fact that I don't see this happening.

The conversion losses are going to be huge and 400W represents probably a 150 - 175A draw from that battery. It's non-trivial to design a switching inverter like this.
