I read that you can't do this in any NT system because it won't accept commands from software other than drivers. Have you found a workaround for this? I don't have any pre-XP copies of Windows lying around.

There are multiple ActiveX DLLs that allow parallel port control in NT based operating systems. It has been covered in the past many times on this forum. I did a quick search for "parallel port xp" and came up with these topics containing links:
