Can 12vdc battery be use directly for a12v/.5amp appliance?

Hi I basically think that this will depend on the power rating of the 12v dc battery. I the current it supplies is less than that of the appliance rating then the appliance will work less efficiently e.g if its a lamp, it will light dimly, the voltage not withstanding because it just involves a potential difference.
