Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could explain to me how a tape recorders REMOTE jack works?
What should voltages/current be?
And what puts out the voltage, the tape recorder REMOTE jack, or the device controlling it such as a phone line recording device?

Yes, you can probably connect it to the parallel port as you describe. However it is best to use some sort of buffer incase you do something which could damage the port.

Thank you for the link.
While that is definitely a cool product, my available spending is limited and I am looking to build something as opposed to buying something.
I already own that phone adapter, and miscellaneous electronic components, and I also know how to program, so I was wondering how to proceed using what I already have.
I see that I made a mistake in my earlier post, the parallel ports Data Pin 2 D0 is for PC Output and not for PC Input, so my same question remains but using pin 12 instead (which is used for PC Input, "Paper Empty")

Oh ok know I understand what you want to do. I don't personally know enough about computers and parallel ports to help out with this one. However, there are quite a few computer savvy people on this site that know a lot about computers and I'm sure that one of them will know an answer. I went online to Google for an interface and I found this site. It might give you some ideas!

First of all I would like to thank you both for replying.
Some Tape Recorders have REMOTE jacks, and when you press RECORD on them, and then plug in a device that is able to control the REMOTE jack, the motor stops running, and it waits to continue to RECORD until the device that is controling the REMOTE jack triggers it to.
I am not looking to record the call itself, but on my computer using the parallel port and software that I will create, would like to keep a log of calls (Time stamp of when the call started, and ended, duration of call)
I have the RadioShack Phone adapter, and would like to use the plug coming off of it that is used for the REMOTE jack on tape recorders, to signal my parallel port software as to the state of the phone line.

If I'm understanding this properly some tape players have an "auto play" "auto rec" function. I have it on my sony tape deck. If your tape deck has that you could mod it to recive the line voltage from the phone being picked by to start the tape player's recording function. |

Because all the phone recorder interfaces are doing is shorting the two contacts together, would it be safe to say that I can take the RS devices Tape Recorder REMOTE plug and wire the tip of it to the parallel ports Data Pin 2 D0 and the sleeve of the RS devices Tape Recorder REMOTE plug to the parallel ports ground pin 18 and then just write software to know when the phone line is in use or not? |

Different recorders will implement it differently but essentially by shorting the two contacts together, the recorder starts. So you need to switch it with a relay, transistor, MOSFET, etc. |
