Hi i am just a beginner into this but i want to build a go kart. First thing that i got was a engine. It's a 3 hp engine. I took the blade off the engine and when i try to start it, when i pull the string half way through it pulls it back into the motor. Sometime soo fast that it hurst my fingers. Does anyone know how i can fix that. Or will it stop after i put the puley on the engine? Thx

pull the cord(rewind) all the way out slowly first, then try the starting pull

Well, there are a few things here:

1. Unless it is a two cycle engine, you can't just turn it on it's side. Even if it is two cycle, you will have to re-orient the carb and fuel tank if you rotate it 90 degrees.

2. As you may have guessed from the above, your shaft is wrong. A vertical shaft engine cannot be easily used in a go-kart unless you have some easy way to transfer that motion to a horizontal shaft (ie. differential, 90 degree gears, worm gear, etc.)

3. Lawnmower engines rely on the blade to counterbalance the engine and provide momentum to carry the engine through it's cycle. These engines normally use lightweight aluminium flywheels which cannot provide enough momentum to continue to rotate the engine after the power stroke. So you will need to replace the flywheel with a cast iron unit if you want to use this engine. This is why the engine is backfiring and pulling the cord back in.

4. If you put the blade back on and the engine still backfires and pulls out of your hand, it has a bad condenser.
