what about a 12.5 horsepoer engine?

Posted - Aug 28 2003 : 09:25:20 AM Maybe. But you'll probably find that it produces a lot of airflow, but very little pressure. Smog pumps work well as belt driven superchargers for lawnmower engines.

Posted - Aug 26 2003 : 11:44:20 AM A/C compressor won't work. Any small ones will not move enough air. Any big ones will be huge, and take much more power to spin over then the engine would ever generate.
If you want to do forced induction, you need to move ALOT of air at a decent (>5PSI) pressure. It takes a serious compressor to do this.

Posted - Aug 06 2003 : 3:39:45 PM A squirrle cage blower will not work. Not enough airflow or pressure.
You can find a turbocharger small enough easily if you know where to look. Most cities have several turbocharger rebuild shops, they can locate you a turbo from a motorcycle. Honda also makes a turbo jet-ski, so you could buy a new replacement turbo if you had the money.
There are a few problems though:
1. The fuel system needs to be reworked. Either install fuel injection, or use a float carb to make a draw through carb system. The turbo would suck through the carb, and then blow directly into the engine.
2. The turbo needs a source of oil. Since most small engines don't have a pressurized oiling system, you would need to provide a small pump supply oil out of the sump. There have been people who have had success using mechanical Chevy fuel pumps, driven from the camshaft. The turbo would then drain back into the sump.
3. You need to make an exhaust manifold. Not hard.
It's not a difficult project. The most annoying thing will be finding the proper turbo for a reasonable price.

Posted - Aug 05 2003 : 3:06:25 PM You can turbocharge anything, but the problem is that you have to scale your turbo unit to your engine. A small engine is going to require a fairly small turbo. I don't know where you'd find the parts for something that small. You might need to do a lot of custom machining work, which can be VERY expensive.

Try searchin on google. I know that in those logging compititions they have some that are supercharged. that might give you some info on how to supercharge a small engine.
