hey, i have serious plans of building a hovercraft. but somehow the whole year at my school found out and have even made bets it wont work. noone and i mean no one believes it could work. they say dumbass comments like "a leafblower cant lift you up!" and all that bullshit. anyway. i still really want to build one. but i just want to be sure WILL IT WORK? becasue if it doesnt, i will not only be the joke of the school, i will haave to pay my bets.
so yeah. will it work?
i also though of building a gokart, but to me, they look more expensive and complicated to build...
so i am asking for advice...
please answe ALL my questions on this post. (sorry if thats bossy)

i stand corrected. for just making it work, it is known , that a small leafblower would work. i would n't chance it just yet

I built a hovercraft using a massive industrial squirrle cage blower powerd by a 3.5HP engine. It needed a 1/2 horse electric motor to start it, but it did work...sort of. The blower just made TOO much air, and eventually destroyed itself. But if you size your blower properly, it will work very well. I have seen some great squirrle-cage based hovercrafts.

I dont think you could get enought thrust from a screwdriver...Ive tried making little helocopters with them and they really dont have enough rpm. The squirlcage is for lift, and one from a household AC would probibly be more than enough

there is still hope, there are some kids i know who can actually use hand tools, and me and my frend are building a go kart. geneva is not a lost cause!!

I agree... Almost all of the kids at my school are completely clueless, and I mean that they know absolutely nothing at all, and don't care. I can say anything about the school computers, and they will either stare blankly or just ignore me. They don't know how anything works. The most they know is the little fifth grade lesson in electricity ("If you hook up a battery to a light bulb, I glows! And thats how electricity works")
All I can say is that there aren't enough fast food resturaunts to give them all jobs... Or enough jails to hold them, either.
Okay, I will end my little rant now....

the squrell cages are a bit flaky. if a reputation is on the line, go with a method that is known to work. user a hand drill to power a propeller to move around. itill be slow, but it will work. then later add on a more powerfull motor. once you proove itill work, then experiment. good luck!
i look at the kids at school and i worry for all the world. how can some of theese morons function in today's word. i am being cocky again. ill stop.

is this way better? becasue it sure looks harder

well I would go down to walmart and get one of those cheap inflateable rafts, and then go to an airconditioner shop and see if they have any old units I could get the squirl cage out of. then I would use a motor from the cooling fan in a car to drive that. Next I would take a lawn mower (or equivalent) motor and attach a alternator to it and the trust fan. EMT would work for the frame

Yes, it will work. As long as you design it properly...See, there's a thing about people: they're stupid. Pitifully, disgustingly stupid. Most people can't operate basic hand tools, let alone even begin to comprehend even how the simplist machine operates. They go happily through life, unaware of the world around them. They pay for their oil changes....You know, I had someone comment that my electric Razor scooter looked "ghetto"....Looking at the pink palms of his hands and perfectly clean fingernails revealed that he had never done a hard day's work in his life, much less knew how to weld, cut, wire, etc. So don't worry about what other's say, because odds are that they have absolutely ZERO experience with fabrication, welding, science, or any sort of problem solving.
I have had a lot of people tell me that a lot of what I have done is impossible. Funny, those people don't say much after you prove them wrong...
Since there was only one question, I believe I have answered it.
