Looks cool but very expensive to build.

Obviously, homemade turbocharger based turbojets are not the right thing to use...
One more flame like that and you're outta' here.

Posted - Jul 20 2003 : 4:19:34 PM trying to repel earths force is almost impssible, the feilds change every couple of yards. plus if you travel over the equator, you loose lift and eventually get more ATTRACTED to the earth, turning you into a highh speed projectile, killing you on impact and maybie leaving a crater! plus, your power supply would have to be a couple thousand amps.
maybie you could use a large diaphragm (i think that is how it is spelled kinda) and make it vibrate at say 20 hertz. on the downstroke, the diaphram would compress the air into high pressure, and on the upstroke, ductson the top would duct the air under the diafram.
actually, replling earth's forc is probably lik a monopole magnet

Posted - Jul 18 2003 : 10:40:40 PM MAMA MIA!!!
You guyz are krazy a jetpack!!! I started to read your ideas last week, went to talk to one of my bosses which is a mechanical eng. He had a turbine in his garage which he used in his small buggy to get many MHP, it was really quite nice as he said. So i ask him if he could loan him to me, MAN THAT STUFF HAD MASS, F*** that was very very heavy, well the power was quite big, i tested it grabed to 2t (bassicaly and old truck) Wheight and man he started to move that like he was pushing a feather, i had to take the fuel out of it.
NOW F***** way i am going to put that in my back. I am thinking of an eletromagnetic device, but the worst part is hazardous damage and gamma radiation. Bassically it uses the lifter technology, the concept is to creat an opossite field to the earth's field. so they will both repell each other but you can't repell earth (mass) so basically you are the one repelled. The problem is that i need F (in newtons), but in order to the time, so i want W(work) in eletronics that is = to Voltage, so that way i can create a magnetic flux, so that the flux can creat a magnetic field. so i will need a nice 45000V power supply, the lifter will be in triangle shape and it will carry a 10kg wheight(just to start)
my GOAL:
To carry a human ( not me of course :D i like to have my feet on the ground)
wish me luck! :P

Posted - Jul 18 2003 : 10:31:46 PM The First Idea Is duct fans.It is easy and all it need is a charged battery like this one:
or a more detailed one here:
This extraordinary one-of-a-kind aircraft is being offered for sale by sealed bid through 5:00 PM, PST, August 15, 2003. Yes it is for sale. and the price is Offer price (minimum bid $1,000,000) i know its high (for some)
OR
A jet pack like that of a Harrier (a VTOL) uses a thrust that can be vectored downward for lift then vectored slightly backward for forward flight. If vectored all the way backward you may fall unless you have wings or hover thrusters.
A 20 second Rocket Hop jetpack design looks like this:

or even a Jet vest
 Description:
Three tanks mounted on a form-fitting strapped fibreglas jacket or corset worn by the rocket belt user. The middle tank contain the pressurizing gas (nitrogen) while the other two hold the fuel (hydrogen peroxide). Jutting from the tanks and leading outward at each side of the operator are curved pipes with the small nozzles protruding downwards on each end, while two other, smaller pipes protrude under each of the operator's arms and have motorcycle-like handle grips for the throttle and directional control. For safety's sake, the operator has to wear coveralls, a crash helmet, and boots. The propellant is 90% hydrogen peroxide. High pressure nitrogen gas is turned on by a valve at the side and forces the peroxide over a small, built-in catalyst bed which decomposes the peroxide out through the nozzles as a powerful, non-combusting steam exhaust. Pitch and roll are controlled by movements of the operator's body.
Dimensions:
Width: about 18.5 in.
Len.: about 3 ft. Wt. (loaded): 125 lbs Thrust: 0-300 lbs

Posted - Jul 18 2003 : 5:30:10 PM well your probibly right (I've been trying to concvince them of that for ahwile) that a gas turbine made from a turbo has a very low thrust for their weight...you would be better off using their torque

Posted - Jul 18 2003 : 3:35:58 PM Personnaly, i think turbojets don't have a good size to weight ratio. i would use pulsejets. they can be made very easily and put out a helluva lota power for their weight. that means you can have more space for more fuel, parachutes or a camera ect.

Posted - Jul 18 2003 : 1:55:28 PM well your right a gyrocopter would be easier and more practical to make....but you have to admid that a jetpack would be pretty awsome

Posted - Jul 18 2003 : 11:39:09 AM But a gyrocopter is so much better!!! and they used it once in a James Bond Movie. Here is another link http://www.avnet.co.uk/melmorrisjones/flyhigh.htm that link has some good pics

Posted - Jul 17 2003 : 8:42:07 PM what is so great about a jet pack??? why don't u make a gyrocopter??? it is more affordable and it is easy 2 make. here www.gyrocopter.ca/ and here is another www.avnet.co.uk/melmorrisjones/ gyro1.htm
bye

Posted - Mar 24 2003 : 01:02:52 AM Aaron, Don't let a machinist tell you he can make a turbine engine!! Turbocharger tolerances are considered big compared to turbine engine clearances. I have seen GE T-700 series engines fail a runout check at 0.00021"... Not your average cut-n-grind operation. When you start talking materials, the issue gets bigger. Specialty metals are the norm, and a HIGH pressure (1000 lb. +) injection system is needed to run jet fuel. A hovercraft or tip jet helicopter is far more realistic...
If defying gravity was easy, everyone would be doing it.
