So I was fixing my girlfriends grandfathers computer yesterday, and had to restart it for updates. No doubt he had a password, but what interested me most, is that his password hint was the title of a bible verse. Also, I bet a lot of people use bible verses as passwords. I found this interesting for a few reasons.
1. A quote from one of my favourite movies "Hackers" was in said verse.
2. I've never heard of a word list for a password cracker made up of verses from the bible.
3. It sounds like a popular thing to use, especially for older people.
And 4. Not only was the password a bible verse, but in the bible above his desk, was a note with the exact password on it, on the page the verse was on.
I've been taking security classes lately, and this is just so interesting to me. I consider myself more of a grey hat hacker, so I will not use that information for mischief. Just interested.

Seems reasonable. I use all kinds of things as password. Some form songs, technical writing, and yes even the old Bible.
I'm sure there are Bible rainbow tables out there. But if it's a Windows system, you don't need to bother. Like any OS, all bets are off if you can physically access the computer. So boot up with something like the "Offline Windows Password and Registry Editor" and zero out the password in the SAM. Note this will render any encrypted files unreadable but people typically don't encrypt. |
