I'm going to start by saying that after over 20 years, this may be the last time I attend the North American International Auto Show. Over the last few years I've watched the show be gutted to a shell of its former self. Combine that with recent political leanings of the US that make it unsafe for foreigners to travel there, I am finding much less motivation to make the journey. The Windsor-Detroit Tunnel Bus is also slated for decommissioning which means I will now have to once again drive into Detroit and spend $20+ (US) for parking.
There was virtually no technical content in the show. I remember 10 years ago when every manufacturer had cutaways, technical displays and presentation of their technical achievements. In the main hall, there was exactly one chassis on display, belonging to the 2026 Dodge RAM 1500 Ramcharger. That was it. Any "technical" content was mainly part of the spokesperson presentation and limited to how the vehicle connects to a smart phone.
While many of the major manufacturers were missing (off hand, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, Kia, Mercedes, BMW and others were only represented by a few vehicles supplied from local dealers) there were a few interesting concepts.
The Buick Wildcat EV concept was a real stunner. Kudos to Buick for looking back in their history which let's not forget includes cars like the Grand National, to produce the concept of a muscular 2 door coupe. I may have viewed this at a previous show, but 2025 was the first time I was able to get close.
An inclusion of well known movie cars was a nice surprise. And not just the time machines and ECTO1s we are all accustomed to seeing. The show also had a new addition in the form of an exotic and classic display, tucked almost secretly into a room at the far end of the hall. Maybe they were trying to control traffic into the narrow-isled space?
For the first time in several years, the basement was utilized for display space. It used to be home to local companies, test drives (typically of EVs) and some custom/modified vehicles. This time, local car clubs and owners were able to display their stuff. It's been a long time since I have seen a Reliant Robin in person.
There are a bunch of pictures of the Aisin EV components because long term I am considering an EV project.
Incidentally I missed the last bus at the Cobo center, so it was a mad dash to run the 3.5 miles to the Maritime Sailors' Cathedral to catch the bus at the las stop prior to crossing the border. It would have been a long walk back to Canada otherwise.
