Teachers Strike
Tuesday, January 27, 2004

Apparently the teachers in Ontario are thinking of going on strike. Don't know whether it is the Catholic or the public school board, but that's not exactly the point. The teachers are requesting better pay, more benefits and more prep time during the day so that they (and they gave this example) don't have to grade report cards at home.

Is it just me, or are the teachers basically saying that they don't like homework? Funny, that they are willing to assign the students 4 hours of work to do at home, yet can't are no longer willing to sacrifice their own time. Quite a paradox if you ask me.

We don't bank hours every 5 years. We can get less pay and then take a sabbatical--something not unheard of. Furthermore, even with the summer off, we still put in just as many hours as a person with a two week break--including Christmas and March break. With two post-secondary degrees, I think we deserve our pay. Why aren't people ranting about the pay of other government workers?

The New Jersey Teachers' Union and the "educators" in the Neshaminy School District should absolutely be ashamed of themselves. Who are you that you should be so lucky not to pay for health care and have guaranteed job security? Here's what I'd do if I was governor : 1) FIRE ALL TEACHERS ASSOCIATED WITH A UNION 2) Publish their names in the local paper 3) Hire more competent, currently out of work or recently graduated teachers 4) Sit back and watch as unionized teachers find out what reality looks like Our taxes would go down, our education quality would go up and unions would go where they should go, to the trash. SHAME ON YOU!

Lets talk about the strike that is going to happen now with the college teacher (Feb 2010). Isn't that nice...wanting more money again and a secure contract. Welcome to our world...no ones career is safe anymore. You talk about how long it takes you to mark homework. Big deal, you have the summers off and you also bank hours to enable you to get a whole years salary every 5 years. Pleaseeeeeeeeeee, give me a break...I think your compensated enough. As a matter of fact, your more rich than the most of us. The economy is falling, people in the 40's are mostly affected and have to go back to retrain but you don't see that and you also don't see how these people are living off of money that is off the poverty level. You tell me...when was the last teacher in it for teaching and not just for the money? I am sick of this, maybe it's about time the goverment should put the union in its place and then you'll see mulitple teachers quit and the one's that stay will be in because they want to be in it!

You still missed the point. I did NOT say that I deserve to strike because of the hours. I was responding to the person who has the crazy idea that we make $130 per hour. I also did NOT say that I hate the profession. I said that we are NOT lazy, as many people would like to think. Strikes are NOT for greed. With the hours we work it equals out to any other middle class job out there. I know people who make $26 per hour, but bring home over $90 000 a year because of overtime. With all the extra hours teachers put in (HOURS THAT WE CHOOSE TO PUT IN), it balances out.

lol----I think NOT---I calculated my pay in my first year PER HOUR and it was $5/per. Now that I'm in my fifth year and have my base plans done, and have become more efficient, it's like $20 per hour. You can't go basing it on an 6 hour day--because we are there before school starts and after it ends, and we also work from home during the week and on weekends.

(Editor's notes: You know the deal with you sign up. If you are not willing to work long and hard (ha, funny...as if teachers work harder then other people) hours, then look to another profession. Strikes are greed, nothing more.)

Teacher's have to have two university degrees to teach, that's a total of 5 postsecondary years minimum. That's also $40, 000 - $45, 000. And they can't just pass, they need excellent grades. They work average 10 hours a day, and work well into the summer, and start 1-2 weeks before the school reopens for the fall. Teachers volunteer (do not get paid) to run extra curriculars like graduation, socceer, volleyball, music, special events--you name it! When teachers mark homework it is not just 4 hours a night--it can be an extra 6 hours per day (depending on the subject). For example, if a teacher has 90 students in total (persuming 30 per class, but there could me more), it takes at least half an hour to mark each paper. That means 45 hours to mark them. If the average work week is 40 hours, teachers are tagging on an extra 45 hours in one week, just when assignments are due. That turns to be minimum 85 hours that week, plus entering the grades, extra curriculars, planning, counselling, duty, etc. It could work out to over 100 hours a week--and they aren't paid by the hour. If you think it's so easy, why don't you become a teacher? Oh yeah, all the meanwhile, a good number of students don't want to learn and are emotionally draining.

(Editor's notes: I would never become a teacher. I'm not that kind of person. I would never take a job that I would not enjoy. Teachers know they they are signing up for when they decide to become teachers.)

Many times teachers are striking for the students. Most of the complaints are not paid, do your homework and check it out. Teachers want smaller class sizes so that the students can get more attention. Teachers want resources so that the students can have a learning environment that is fun and challenging. Teachers need planning time to avoid burnout, so that they can be more effective in the classroom. Keeping attention of 30 people at one time take a lot of energy! For their amount of eduction teachers are paid fairly, not poorly, but they are CERTAINLY NOT overpaid!

(Editor's notes: Striking for the student?! I remember a teachers strike in high school. It put us all three weeks behind and seriously damaged the quality of the education we received that year. Also ate 3 weeks into our summer. Striking for the student my butt...)

By the way "editor" I am not assuming that people work extra hours, but a lot of people here are assuming that teachers have it easy, and work very few hours. And they assume that teachers LOVE giving out homework. Hearing whining and complaining when homework is assigned is a pain in the neck, but according to the curriculum it HAS to be done. Now there is a new bill passing about less homework--hallelulia! Parents should get together and voice their opinions so that LESS HOMEWORK can be assigned. And by the way, I am going to mention again, you idea that I "assumed" people don't work extra hours is unfair, I was defending the idea that teachers do not work hard, or for their money. In the end, it's as if we have 1-2 weeks of vacation if you look at all of our hours. And for the person who made the comment about how teachers don't like homework--we went to school, and we all did it. It's not new to us.

(Editor's notes: Oh, did I mention there were numerous studies that prove homework is actually detrimental to education? Look it up...)

My Sister in law is a primary school teacher and is so poor she can afford to pay £250 a week just to send her kids to day nursery. I had to give up work when I had my children! She was moaning about inflation the other day but it effects every one. How would she like it if she had to worry how she was going to pay for food not just the price tags in shops like MONSOON, where she thinks nothing of buying a kids coat for £100! I'm sorry but teachers should get into the real world...oh but they've never actually left school have they to know what that's like!

When teachers go on strike, the whole school has to leave. Everyone isn't in on it, most teachers don't want to strike, but have to go along with it. It's strictly business. Some people are very driven to make changes in the system so that teachers, like anyone else in the work place, move forward in the world of insurance, pension plans, etc. School boards are largely made up of good, hard-working people who most often never set foot in classrooms and are not equipped to make realistic decisions about the needs of teachers in schools. Their decisions are mostly based on monetary needs as they see them. As Mark Twain once said, "First God made idiots. This was for practice. Then he made schoolboards." School board mambers are definitely not idiots, but if you are a teacher, you wonder how it's possible that people who never teach and never even observe teachers have any say in how things need to be run. Where else in the busiess world does this happen?

(Editor's notes: Basically everywhere. Often supervisors and bosses are so removed from the actual job they have absolutely no inclination of how things actually work.)

You people are ridiculous. Teachers do not assign tons of homework because they want to, it's because voters and parents like you decided that it should be part of the curriculum. Teachers have always disagreed with tons of homework. Also, there are many children out there who procrastinate, and then get four hours of homework. And by the way, correcting homework and tests and writing report cards goes way beyond four hours. Think of it this way, a highschool teacher works a minimum of 10 hours per day, and they have 90 students per day. When a test goes out and it takes an average of 30 minutes to mark, respond and imput each students grades, that's an extra 45 hours of work per week, on top of 50 hours, which means 95 hours per week! H-E-L-L-O people!!!!!!!

(Editor's notes: And you're assuming that other people do not work extra hours?)

I"ll say this this ,the bc teachers got gall, no brains to speak of but gall.Only 2 out of 10 teachers are worthwhile. Its always been that way but the union mentality dictates that they should be paid on a time of service scale. In reality most recognize that good perfomers get paid more because they deserve it.If teachers want to be more overpaid than they already are eg inB.C.$ 71000.00+three months holidays plus a pension that adds an addional $ 20000.00 a year assuming a life of 80 years {15 x 40000divide by 2 since they pay half and then added to the years of service}for a total of 91000.00+3months holidays++Then perhaps they might try to elect a competent govt{not ndp morons]so that at least its affordable. As to this concept of law eg gandi/clifford olson modis operandi all I can say is get a real brain you surreal whatevers.Obviously the society can only provide the educational system it can afford [about 25% of provincial income]and pricing it stratosperically based on ridiculous assumtions just amounts to the rantings of unrealistic idiots. The whole education system is rotten and should be abandoned and privatised .We as a society would get a more relevant system and better teachers who as a group might hopefully avoid this Gandi crap and the hypocritical lefty horseshit .

I have a few different views of this subject. I believe teachers are underpaid for what they are asked to do by the school systems. I also believe teachers are in some ways asked to do way more than they should and in some ways are restricted from doing as much as they can. Teachers are there to teach students. If the student doesn't want to learn the teacher should not be told that they have to teach them. By forcing the teacher to try to teach the ones who don't want to learn the rest of the students are suffering through bad behavior and slowed learning pace. Most of the time this is because the student sees no real world benefit for learning what is being taught. Teachers are required to teach students certain things. Every student who completes a class successfully is supposed to have learned the basics of the subject. If the whole class learns the basics early on they can get more into the details of the subject and learn more than just what they are required to learn. Most school systems have to give their students standardized tests to "gauge their learning". Most of these schools stress upon their teachers how important it is for their students to do well on these tests. Some teachers are even penalized if their students don't perform up to a certain level on the tests. Some of this can be avoided by changing the way some students are taught. I, for one, am more apt to learn if the subject is taught with visual aids (demonstrations, lab-type work) and have a harder time learning straight out of a book. Field trips work wonders for students. If that's not feasable then bring the demonstration to the students by having assemblies in the gym or cafeteria. If teachers would be allowed (more rightly if the schools were allowed or had the backbone) to assign the students on their ability to learn or how they learned (bookworms in one class, visuals in another) then all the students would benefit and it would be much easier on the teachers since they would only have one type of student in the class at a time. Does this discriminate against some students? Yes. Does the current way of lumping everyone in one class discriminate against some students, especially the fast learners? Yes. Eliminating standardized tests would do wonders for many students and teachers. A large portion of schools teach what is on those standardized tests. That isn't giving the students a fair shake at what might really matter in the real world. That is where most students get their opinion of what school is like and how it doesn't apply to what they see every day when they leave the building. Standardized tests force the teachers to teach only what is on the test and not what might actually interest their students. Basing a teacher's performance on how their students do on these tests is asinine in that it doesn't show how well the teacher could do if they had the freedom to teach the subject in their own way. Mostly it causes the teachers to burn out and lose their passion for teaching and turn into the boring, restrained people who just stand at the head of the classroom each morning. Most teachers I know have the ability to be wonderfully creative with their teaching methods but are shackled by policies that say they must do it one way only because some clown somewhere wrote it down as the best way for everybody, forgetting that very few of us will learn any subject the same way as the person next to us. I do have a few comments on some of the other posts. For some that would ask "what would I do if I had to take home an assignment every night for each student" I would say don't assign that much work. Do the students have to be quizzed each day? Can't they grade their homework in class by simply exchanging papers and you giving the answers out? It has worked for as long as anyone in my family can remember and we go back a long way. For those who think they are underworked and overpaid I would say that is only true of some tenured teachers. They can't be fired without commiting a henious crime so they mostly just do what ever it is they have to so they can get their check. I have had many like this and it is obvious to the students and has a profound affect on everyone involved. For those many who like the statement "if you can read this thank a teacher" I will reply that my parents taught me to read before I entered school along with all my siblings and most every one of the people with whom I went to school. It is only true if you count parents as teachers, and you certainly should, but for this discussion I don't think they count as they are not paid at all.

I see a lot of teacher bashing here and just couldn't pass the opportunity to defend teachers. The comment about teachers not wanting homework stands out as particularly absurd. Does the person who wrote this have even the slightest grasp on reality. I personally have 130 students daily and if I take home an assignment a night for each student the load would be enormous this person also forgot that I had to plan the assignment, type it, copy it and distribute it while explaining it and helping students with it. I have to engage the students in an entertaining yet educational manner all day with one 50 minute prep period usually used to fill out paper work on my now "included" special needs students (more than 25 in my case). about 1 in10 student gives a rip about school or grades or anything positive and if you challenge that opinion they have a parent that though they haven't voted in an election in 15 years will suddenly become an activist in defense of their students right to be appathetic and the schools failure to adequately provide for their child's needs. But wait there is more I have to, because of diminished staff, coach three sports and an academic team. I work no less than 70 hours a week and frequently more than 80. I would ask the above respondents why should the teachers sacrifice while parents enjoy the benefits of that sacrifice and by the way iI am a parent of 7 children (5 adopted and 2 biological for those who would diparage my large family). Teachers are expected to work miracles every day and be happy to be reprimanded when we don't and thank the administration for our pathetic pay horrible hours. If you can read this thank a teacher and know that you owe them more than you could ever imagine.

I support the teachers in their strike. I have raised 6 children in this school system and often had to home school them because my children were too bright for the class and funding for bright children was never there. I have never beleived the school system to be an essential service. For years parents taught their children at home and did quite fine. They raised educated, upstanding, and responsible citizens. School is a luxury we as Canadians enjoy and take for granted. Who taught your child to speak? Who taught your child to walk? Who taught your child to tie their shoes or tell time? Need I say more? If we want more for our children we need to be more involved with our teachers and support their desires for a better education for our children. Gordon Campbell has never shown our children, our elderly or our poor the respect they deserve. I doubt he has ever had to miss a meal. Compassion is a very big part of being a responsible leader and a trait our Gordon Campbell lacks sorely.

Don't blame the teachers, blame their lousy union for being so pig-headed. Even Vince Ready can't deal with them...what does that tell you? Vince Ready has made thousands of deals between GOVERNMENT and all kinds of unions. But he can't make one here. No government can deal with the teachers unions as shown with the last NDP governement. Even the NDP doesn not condone illegal strikes! So it doesnt matter what government is in power, history has shown that the teachers union is not willing to work with anyone. But thats why they get paid all that money for...for sheperding the sheep (teachers) around and getting them no where. What a lousy union. The present teachers strike and protests that are pending, are probably the most valid in many years. JUST THINK ABOUT IT the Campbell Government has tried to legislate a Contract rather than negotiate one, and has now deemed the strike to be illegal. The only reason it is supposedly illegal is because the Government and large corperations want to keep the general public hearded between the two ditches and have total control. The legislation has done that, it is the same as changing the rules of any game half way through, just because someone dosen't like the way it's going. There is not a single person in North America that would have the Lifestyle that we do if it were not for organized labour ! By freezing the assets and the function of the Teachers Union This Campbell Government has taken away the RIGHT of the very CORE Reason of why we DO have the Lifestyle we do. NOW if that isn't worth fighting for then nothing is. Even the non-union workers in this province enjoy the lifestyle because of organized labour, so it's not just the Unions that should be fighting to get rid of this DICTATORSHIP LEGISLATION, all the people of BC should. A small sacrifice today for a lifetime of gain. Education is not a burden it is an INVESTMENT ! Fight for your Rights or be a Sheep. Like I said JUST THINK ABOUT IT !

To the goverment: Do you have kids? If you do, then think about this, your kid, not learning any thing in school because the teacher rarely gets to give proper leson because of all the students in the class that need alot of their help, so she doesn't have the time. Amagine your kids class having almost NO books to read because the teachers didn't have the money to go and spend, becuse they need their money for food, and to pay the bills, so at the end of grade 7 they're still have alot of problemes with reading! So think about it, give the children a right to a proper education.

The class ize thing is bullshit....the gov't already said they would take care of that. Its the nice fat rasie. Now that the courts have tied up teachers strike pay...who is getting paid? Its that fat slut Jinny Sims who is still getting paid a nice big union salary. Lets see her forfeit her salary and give it to the teachers who are losing their paychecks week to week. Oh no...you wont see that. Then there are the teachers..what a fucken life they lead...two months off for summer holidays...ouch that hurts...then the Pro-D days...where they go to cocktail parties and get pissed or else they go off to Costco and shopping trips...arent they supposed to be in school? Teacher's should go on strike not because school sucks but because the government are being unresonable by not giving schools enough money to buy books so teacher's have to use their own money. Then the problem with having too many students in one class, some classes have 42 students in one class. That's not fair to the teacher and the students, because the teacher can't help 42 students at the same time, and some students need more help then other's.

I think striking overall accomplishes nothing! A teacher's strike would be awful only because students like me will have to work twice as hard...then the teachers wont have time to give extra help when someone needs it. This is my graduating year and last year when they came close to a strike i was sooOOo happy but now i realise how awful it would be. Teacher's are helping society and kids like us get by in life I think they deserve maybe just a little more credit Grade 8 student

The teacher strike going on now in BC is different. They are mainly wanting better school conditions for you. They'd like a small raise because there are some teachers who are dealing with 35 - 40 students per class. Now if you're a teacher who teaches four classes a day, that's 160 students you have to teach and be responsible for. So if you issue something basic like a test, you have 160 tests you have to mark on your own time. Now let's say that there were two assignments due the day of the test, that's 480 things to mark and grade. Now don't tell me that wouldn't get you down. And with a class of 40, it's not like the teacher can really help you if you need help during class, because if they were to listen to every single person, they wouldn't get anything taught in class. The fact is is with this Bill 12 floating around, it's something that I believe teachers should strike for. These teachers are out there risking their jobs so they can make a change that would better you, the student. The BC liberals have also cut a lot of budget for a lot of people such as the Librarians, Special Education workers, Second language teachers, and other areas. If anything, the problem lies with the BC Liberals. They have, basically, stripped the school of a lot of neccesities for many students, saying "Screw you, you don't need help", and then jam packing the classes saying "Screw you, you don't need any one on one help", then not bothering to pay the teachers more for all the extra work they have to do with these jam packed schools, saying "Screw you, you having to work more should change how much you get paid, live with it" In the end, I see the problem is not the teachers, they're fighting for the student, it's the BC Liberals There's an article on it here http://www.bctf.bc.ca/Bargain/negotiations2004/TeachersTakeAStand/WhyStrikeVote.html

School isnt even good anymore...Its so slack like the teachers dont even care what u do..some teachers u can walk all over they dont no how to control u they just suck at teaching most the thing we get taught in school we will NEVER use why dont they teach us something important that we can actually use in the futur. They dont even explain things good like im failing 2 of my class's and its only like the 4th week of school..becuz i dont no what the hell im doing..do i pay attention sure..just as much as the average student..i do try! but no i still fail..They dont care if u fail anyways arnt they saposed to give u as much help needed..which they dont..becuz they r bad teachers..they care to much about talking and trying to get it through ur little head then actually helping they dont even pay attention to the kids! seriously i could sit there for ever and they wouldnt notice that im not doing anything...PLZ teach us something useful! if not then shut down the schools! who needs it anyways when we dont get taught the things we need!!!!!!!

(Editor's note: Don't blame your failure on the teachers. I have found that this is rarely true. Perhaps actually ASK several of them why you are failing?)

Ok, look I know everybody hates school. Look I think if you strike a bit more often, the better chances everything is going change. I m not saying because i want more days off I m saying because then I get better thought in class and have classes of 15 ,10 so I get more attention. Even though I hate school. I thank you teachers for everything!!!!!!! Without You I be out picking garbage! THANK YOU anonymous

A few thoughts.... Going to school is a privilege. There are millions of children in countries around our world who don't have the opportunity to receive an education, so those of us who do should be greatful. Without your education, you wouldn't even be reading this site or writing a response. Next, Ontario was the only province to have OAC in the past. The rest of Canada was able to complete the curriculum requirements of highschool in 4 years, so I imagine that Ontario students should be able to handle that too. It is unfortunate when teachers strike, but instead of solely blaming the teachers, more focus should be directed to the government and individual school boards. Teachers cannot work without a contract and if the government and school boards are not willing to negotiate, then that is when a strike will take place. For those students who 'hate school' I do believe that you can drop out at the age of 16. However, after reading some of these posts, I would recommend staying in school because unless you are still in elementary school, I teach grade five students who can write more proficiently.

Oh yeah what a grat idea. Mess up our generation and make us all dumb because they want more money.Yeah sure, they already have their education. I mean yea prices for everyday living has gone up but if EVERYBODY not just teachers didn't complain maybe it wouldn't and they wouldn't need more money. Like my god, we as students have enough on out plate. No more OAC so 5 years of highschool learning is cramped into 4, theres the literacy and math testing, theres your social life and homework and often jobs and a whole lot more that we have to deal with. A lot of students have it worse then the damn teachers. Some of us don't even have a home and school is sadly all some of us have. How selfish can they be man. there affecting parents too cause they gotta find someone to watch their kids when they go to work and its just a huge chain reaction.

I think teacher's strikes are horrible. While there over figting we're at home doing nothing and we're getting a lack of education. Yes it may seem like a vacation for us but then when the teacher's return will we have to do the year over again. I just really, strongly think that teacher strikes are still and always will be BAD!

Teachers actually do get strike pay, like most unions that strike, but it's not much. It's not a holiday either...We picket and are faced with a lot of public frustration at the inconvenience. It's not a strike for more money. Most boards are offering a fair cost of living type wage increase, and that's fine. The major issue is preparation time. More preparation time means improved lessons, improved assessment and feedback for student work, fewer stressed teachers and more specialist teachers hired to cover the prep time who can offer interesting and new programs for students. It's not likely there will be a strike, but if there is, it will be to improve the learning environment, and not to line the pockets of teachers.

RE: Teachers Strike

The Big Picture: A Jadestone is worthless until it has been processed. For the importance of their jobs in our system of society, teachers are not well enough compensated for their (more often than not) unselfish and patient attempts to educate even those who resist it the most. Of course, a few bad apples can ruin the reputation of the bunch, but very few people pay attention to the right ones anyway. Without a strong education, the very roots of our strengths as a society crumble as the competition advances farther and faster. There are many types of educations--they are all important--and without a dedicated teacher, the quality of the training, and thus the work, will diminish. Compensate the educators well, keep their morale high, and we (western civilization as a whole) will stay on top of our game. [I am not a teacher, I have yet to even master my own path!]

teachers striking is just a way for them to get justice. the reason most teachers strike is to proove they will stand up for their rights and fight for what they believe in. i for one did not enjoy having extra school days due to the strike but as someone who works hard to get a chance to be in school i respect and admire my teachers very much for standing up and being real and demanding their fare share. God bless them and stay open minded and remember they dont want to strike way more than you BECAUSE THEY DONT GET PAID!! and some teachers even loose their jobs for striking. be more realistic and open minded and all you who hate school, you dont have to do it, drop out and let the people who want to lean be in your place.

Well as a College student, I am very disappointed that my professors are going to go on strike because it is my money and time that is being wasted because these teachers are greedy, I am sorry but what was wrong with their pay or benefits 5 years ago, its just very mind boggling because these is my graduating year and now if the teachers go on strike the rest of the year is wasted and my placement is gone, I was hoping to start a career by the beginning of summer and now that dream is crushed because the Ontario Teachers want to strike.
I agree that teachers are getting credited for their work and having to put up with kids all day is hard work, but please remember this is what they chose to do, this is the path they chose and now they should live with their choice or get a new career.

Its usually the new teachers that strike.. you dont see any teachers that have 15+ years of teachign complaining.. The new teachers bs cause the starting pay is bad, and they are not used to the workload and certain students.. when they decided to go in to teaching, people were taught differently then they are now. Teachers cant do anything to you now. Detentions are useless.. all the school can do is expel you, but the people that get expelled dont really care if they pass or fail anyway. I am not saying that they should beat the students or anything, but when they did, there were hardly any behaviour issues and such.... oops.. thats a nother topic.. oh well..
