whats up everyone, i was hoping someone might make a forum specially for those that want to turbo their cars, thanks Aaron.

i have several questions, first off, if i turbo my 1987 rx7 will it be as fast as a TII? also i hear that you have to becareful because you can easily damage the car.

Having a turbo on a N/A would make it faster than a TII in most situations. If every thing else is the same on the 2 cars, the N/A having a higher compression ration would create more power at the same boost levels. Not an insane amout more, but still more.

You can easily damage your car, If you don't do everything right and take the proper precausions. If done right, it can be made much safer than a TII.

The main thing will be the tune of your car after you've put the turbo on. Turbo cars have FAR different fueling requirements than your N/A does.
Idealy a whole aftermarket standalone ECU would be the best bet, but it seams alot of other people have got away with just an Apex'i SAFC or something similar.
Which ever computer you use to control the fuel, you'll need bigger injectors and a bigger fuel pump.

Personally, when I get some money.., I'll be using an FD fuel pump, 4x720cc injectors and a Microtech LTX8 ECU.

Well for me it will work out cheaper to turbo my 6port engine, because I got alot of the parts very cheap. Ie,(in Australian$) $85 for the turbo, $150 for 3l supra intercooler (bigger than rx-7) and pipeing, manifold was free(custom manifold, doesn't need spacer) currently buying some fuel system upgrades now..
However you might have a different situation and might not be able to get parts at these prices, so it might be cheaper for you to buy a TII engine. But the TII engine doesn't have the high compression our motors do.

by the way, do you know where i could find a good Tii motor?

A few comments:

1. The turbocharged NA would be faster then the TII at equivalent boost due to the higher compression ratio.

2. The compression ratio of the 89-92 turbo rotors is 9.0. The compression ratio of the 86-88 non turbo rotors is 9.4. At about 10 PSI on the 9.0 turbo rotors, the compression is the equivalent of about 8 PSI on the 9.4 non turbo rotors. There are a lot of 89+ turbos running more then 10 PSI.

3. The NA ECU knows nothing of boost, so it cannot deal with fuel and ignition requirements. Solving the fuel problem is easy by adding larger injectors and a bigger pump. An S-AFC works very well for control. Ignition can be manually retarded, electronically retarded (CDI box with boost retard option), or left alone. Currently, my timing is stock. I did not appear to have any timing related problems at 10 PSI, though this spring (after the port job and 3" exhaust) I will be adding a boost sensor to my Crane HI-6 to enable retard on the leadings. At this point I will also be considering setting my S-AFC as boost referenced instead of TPS referenced.

4. Because of the higher compression and ECU, it is easier to damage the turbo-NA engine then it is the TII engine. I have had some severe detonation when I did something stupid, but have seen no damage to the engine. Still makes excellent compression. However, another forum member, Bambam7, has toasted his rear rotor through detonation. I don't know the exact circumstances, but bear in mind that he turbocharged the '89+ engine, which has much higher compression (9.7) and that horrid electronic metering oil pump.

5. It sounds like you have not checked out my turbo-NA page. It would definitely be beneficial for you to do so. http://www.aaroncake.net/rx-7/naturbo.htm

i did check it out..and let me add it was very helpfull, im debating right now weather i should just save up and buy a Tii or start buying the parts to convert mine into a Tii or just drop the turbo. Right now the hardest seems to be dropping the turbo. Lack of money has a huge impact on my decision.

I do not have a turbo N/A, yet. I have been researching it sence May. My 88 vert will most likely go into the garage in late January for an engine swap. A rebuilt engine will be put in with 8000 miles on it.

The reason I am doing the turbo N/A is because I have a vert. If not I would just buy a TII. Many other reasons I am doing it but, to many to list.

If you like to tinker, have something unique and money is not tight then the Turbo N/A is the way to go. If you want to just have a fast car go with buying a TII.

Well, I feel obligated to mention that it will most likely be cheaper to just buy a TII, then it would be to buy an NA and turn it into a TII. Also, turbocharging the NA will be $2000 at least.

The '90 turbo will fit as long as you use the '90 manifold. The S5 turbo are actually a lot better then the S4 units. Much better wastegate and flow.
