What specifically do you need to know about the engine?

well i have an old lawnmower so i want to convert that but... i dont know how to do that. yes thats the evil question you didnt want. i was thinking like removing the blade and putting a chain type deal. but then it would only have 2 speeds. stop and go. im really lost.

If it's a standard vertical crankshaft lawnmower engine, then don't waste your time trying to use it. It can't be run on it's side, and it's a serious pain in the ass to change the orientation of the shaft via gears (or a transmission). Find a horizontal crankshaft engine, then get a centrifugal clutch from a small engine shop, surplus store, karting supplier, etc.

i heard you could put the lawnmower motor on the back of the kart shaft down and put a pulley on and put a pully on the rear axle

yea, and twist the belt 90 degrees. that would work, but it will slip and it takes alot of space.

yea, our technology teacher built one of those. he ended up drawing soo much current withthe leafblower, that the extension cord (it was only 18 gauge) overheated and melted the insulation. i bet he was dropping more power than the device was intended to have go through it.

You would need a clutch. Really, I wouldn't waste my time trying to use a vertical shaft engine UNLESS you have no other choice.
