The Rides on Richmond show started around 2021 however this was the first year I attended the show primarily due to lack of awareness. How did I miss a car show that shuts down a large section of one of the busiest streets downtown 4 years in a row? I think it is due to the organizer's reliance on social media to advertise the show. Since I don't do social media (minus my Instagram account) it was only from a chance mention at a smaller more local show that I learned Rides on Richmond was taking place in July.
I brought my '81 DeLorean which I learned meant that there was no way I was going to be able to see the show myself. I underestimated the "DeLorean effect" but suffice it to say that even driving to a parking spot was a challenge as people stepped in front of the (moving!) car to take pictures and asked me questions through the windows (I decided not) to open a door for fear of hitting someone). By the time I parked, I already had a queue of people wanting to ask questions. This was my first somewhat large show with the car and was an eye opener. 45 minutes to an hour after parking, I was finally able to see a bit of the show.
By a bit, I mean only the portion of the show to the South of my spot. Which was 70% of the show but as I am a completest, not seeing the whole thing will always haunt me.
I was surprised by the variety of vehicles at the show. So many local shows are the same set of muscle cars again and again. Rides on Richmond attracted a much more wide range of participants. It's nice being able to get a closer look at some of the rides I spot around town on a regular basis. Some time was spent in the vicinity of the white FD RX-7 trying to find the owner however I was unsuccessful. Usually if I'm at a show with the RX-7 I am the only rotary though lately, more and more are popping up even though I rarely see another on the streets. There was a surprising selection of rat rods as well, most I have not seen at other local shows.
At that point, as I am speaking to some spectators about the DeLorean, a time machine drives right by and parks about 100 feet down the line! That was unexpected. I excused myself, walked down there and spoke to the owner. Pointing out my '81 parked just down the street. Once a spot opened up beside him, I was able to move my car and wow, did that ever draw a crowd! We ended up staying until after the show ended as another local DeLorean owner (without car) showed up.
I'll definitely be hitting Rides On Richmond in the future, hopefully to see the whole show next time. If you happen to be reading this, to the owner of the Ford Elite I parked beside, I did want to continue our conversation however as you saw, the constant interruption made that impossible.
