The jetpack thread kind of died because it was determined that a jet made from an old turbocharger could not provide enough thrust. However, those who watched Junkyard Wars this week know that isn't exactly true.

This week was jet trikes, and one of the teams built a jet out of an old turbo exactly how I described in the jetpack thread. They built their own combustor and oiling system, as well as an afterburner. It worked OK, but I'm sure with some tuning (and a turbo that isn't puking oil) it could put out some pretty good thrust. The major problem they had was that the afterburner kept going out, but again, a little tweaking could easily fix that.

Whether the system could produce enough thrust to lift a person is up for debate, but it certainly proves that jet engines can be easily made with standard household items.

I'm currently considering a jet-skateboard or scooter for this summer.

I ment to reply to this but the drawing I made was bad so now that I have made a better one I will give you my thoughts

I think that for you to make a turbo jet that will give you enough thust to lift you off the ground you are gonna need 500lbs of thrust thats 300 for the person and another 150 for the pack and then another 50 to allow you to get off of the ground.

From what I have seen, A gas turbine that is made from a car turbo cannot give you enough thrust you need. well at least not in the way that most are made where the burner and cumbustion chamber are 90 degrees to the turbo's output. All of the gas turbins built in this fasion that I have seen do not provide enough thrust compared to there weight.

However, I have seen people take the compressors off of a small car turbo and make a turbo jet that can fit in your hand. These Jets are used in Model airplains and produce thrust compairable to that of the gas turbines mentioned above.

So if you were to take a compressor off of a Semi Truck or other large desil engine then you could get some thrust mabie a couple hundred pounds??
So I figure that two of these large turbines might be able to provide the thrust that you are looking for

That's what I was thinking. Two jets made from T66s, T88s or another large turbo should barely do it. And using two provides a method of steering control...It's all just an idea anyway. Trying to find a suitable turbo for under $100 is hard, but I'm working on it...The test device would be a skateboard and/or bike.
