I made a sparker last week
mainly for lighting my metal working torches like the propane and OA torch but this circuit can be moded to work with a cannon

here are some pics in order of being built
http://photobucket.com/albums/y22/moody07747/New%20ETI/

its basicly a 5V input inverter from allelectronics.com for about $7

parts you will need:
- inverter - allelectronics.com
- momentary NO push button switch - allelectronics.com
- black plastic case - allelectronics.com
- 9V battery clip - allelectronics.com (yes this board can be run up to 12 volts on a scort use, i have run mine for 5 minutes continusly on a 9V battery and the battery is still working strong)

thats it
i would add a voltage multipier from an old TV or something (ebay has some) because the spark is really small and might not run through wires any longer than 7"

i have heard the VM works well with the board but will drain the battery faster

good luck
