i am thinkin of buildin a go-kart similar to yours. i haven't really had many dealings with clutched engines. Are the clutches inside the engines, or do you have to add somthing externally? could you briefly explain please? thanx a lot.

There are two types of engines.
If you want to use a law mower engine, you have to add a centrifugal clutch.

If you use a engine of a motor saw, you don't have to add one, because they are usually in it. They are very strong too and they have a huge moment of force, because they are two tact engines.

Most clutches on go karts are centrifugal type. They look like a little tuna can with a sprocket on the output shaft. There are 2 parts to them, the internal part, it attaches to the engines output shaft and has many spring loaded weights on it, and the housing. As the engine speed increases, cenrifugal forces force the weights outward and they rub against the housing and cause it to turn, thus turning the output sprocket and the kart moves untill engine speed drops below a certain speed and the springs pull the weights back in and the housing is released.
