Ok here goes,
I planing to build an electric scooter from an old razor like Aaron has, but I am having problems finding a motor. I have quite a few taken from cordless drills and 12v air compressors but these all seen to be small compared to what Aaron has on his scooter. I now have found 2 that could be good for the job, I will post the specs, and please tell me wheather they will be ok. Also for a speed controller I have found one from a 12v drill that might be stuitable, I was thinking since it might not be able to handle the higher currents, would it be possible to connect it to a relay and have the relay drive the motor? As for the battery I have a 12v 18AH SLA, the only problem is working out how to mount it on the scooter.

1st one
12v
18800RPM
Current 2.6amp (no load)
Torque 4.9 km/cm @ stall
Current 92amp @ stall
Power: 107W

2nd one
12v
9700RPM
Current 1.3amp (no load)
Torque 6.0 km/cm @ stall
Current 57amp @ stall
Power: 52W

What do you think?

Edit: Sorry, also what do you think would be a good gear ratio?

The motors come up all the time on eBay. There are also plenty of scooter parts suppliers online. I have ordered from http://www.evdeals.com before, but they don't have a very good selection of cheap motors. http://www.oatleyelectronics.com has a better selection of cheap motors and controllers.

My gear ratio with the new motor is about 2.5:1.

At 48 V, the scooter would do about 60 KM/H, which is plenty fast on a Razor with no brakes.

The scooter would just barely crawl right? got any links to online suplliers? Also what gear ratio have you got on yours? I remember reading somewhere on these boards that a 300W and over motors where illegal in some areas to use on an electric vechicle is this ture? What kind of speed where you getting at 48v?

You're not going to go anywhere on 12V. You need at least 24V, and perferably 36V.

Those motors are also way too small. At the minimum, you're going to want a 24V 250W motor, but 350W and above at 36V is more ideal.

My scooter page is actually VERY out of date as I have made some major changes. I ditched the aweful 12V fan motor and installed a decent motor rated 36V @ 350W. For a while I ran it at 48V, but now I generally stick to around 24V which makes a more sane speed.
