Theres this kid in my Computer Apps class who says CONSTANTLY that rotary engines have no torque, yet, he keeps comparing them to big diesel engines in trucks.

Now he is comparing Formula 1 engines to stock Rotary engines. I'm going to start ignoring him. |

Well, being pedantic, it is impossible for an engine to have "no" toque because any rotation implies torque. And without torque, no work could be done, nor would there be any horsepower.
But I'm sure what he means in his own little illiterate way is that the rotary produces less torque then a piston engine. Which is sort of true, and sort of not. Compare the torque of a 1.3 litre rotary and the rotary makes more torque and HP then a 1.3 litre piston engine.
When we start modifying rotary engines to produce higher HP and then compare their torque to that of a piston engine making a similar amount of HP, the rotary produces less torque but extends a flatter torque curve over a higher RPM range (remember how HP is calculated from torque and RPM). Then again, the point is that we are asking a 1.3 litre engine to make amounts of HP that 5+ litre V8s are putting out, so higher RPM horsepower and less torque is the nature of any high output low displacement engine.
Another thing to remember is while Formula 1 engines are making 800 - 1000 HP, they only put out about 250 FT-LBs of torque. Torque does not win races, HP does.
Some people like an engine with a lot of low end grunt but those engines generally have a very short powerband. |
