Was I being negative when I explained that the "10W" TDA2004 amplifier is very old and produces only 2.2W?
You should not ignore the truth.

No, you wasn't 'sir'.
You had just said the truth and nothing but the truth...

Agree. We must accept the criticism around us. Its part of our development anyway . But of course there is always positive and negative one so it will depend upon our response to it.

John, as much we would like this to be the case, billions of people do it all the time. Only time can make this change, and I think you know what I am talking about, but that's off topic and I just had to mention it.

In this instance I think we only had hot-head on our hands. Nothing more, nothing less. Peter (B)astard is kaput from this forum.

Hi,
I found this threat by looking for any reason why this dirty cheap TDA 2004 sounds pretty great....I ´m german please excuse some errors in typing..

Background: My Luxman L410 is not more working, i`m in process of repairing. I just used the Poweramp of it, cause the Preamp is completely cutting out dynamics and details, smearing the colours, makes it "white" and a little grainy. I drive the Poweramp "passiv" just over an extern poti from a HD 7525, still the best CDP I`ve heard. Today I got an used HD 970, I planned to use as extern DAC from PC, which I read a good DAC for the price. Just for the time without my luxman I bought a smaller Yamaha AX 380 at ebay to hear music and compare the players and another DAC.

The Yamaha "natural sound Amp" sounds completely terrible, hard, grainy, not transparent at all, even with "cd direct" in. The next Amp I have is a small Dynavox I just use at my PC, costs brandnew ~ 50$ or so...a cheap chinamade mini-amp with TDA 2004.

Here it comes...it sounds A LOT better than this ugly Yamaha....And I mean really a LOT. Cause it`s low Power of course at standard livingroom volume, but it is airy, transparent, very natural sounding, voices are realistic, there is nothing hard or grainy...a little bit tricky are the always active (a passive one...) tone controls, cause it`s not neutral in mid position, but I did a measure with ARTA to adjust neutral frequency response...and checked Dist. and IM either...

Besides the low power, this thing sounds really good. I have no glue why....there are cheap EL C`s in seriell to the speaker, there are cheap El C´s in the entry.....by the way, the TDA 2004 is stable down to 1.6 ohm.

I have to state, this dirty cheap thing sounds better than most consumer/mid class integrated amps, it sounds far better than the ugly preamp of the luxman l410, if you are satisfied with just normal volume it`s fine...I also read the most important watt is the first watt, cause most hearing at home is just at 1 watt power...

I don`t know why it can sound good, but it`s fact. I´m further surfing the web for tec`s about this chip. Of course it`s a bitter taste to spend hundreds or thousends of bucks if an IC for 1 buck is doing the job as near as good...

By the way, the HD 970 is far away from the older HD 7525, no chance to reach the same level of airiness and natural/analog sounding. Reason could be the 275 OpAmp, it`s said to sound laid back und tuby, there are much better replacement OpAmps (if one is happy to desolder a smd OpAmp..)I wait for the DAC from my friend to test, before any solder action starts.

The old TDA2004 amplifier IC is no longer listed on ST Micro's website and is not stocked anymore at both of North America's biggest electronic parts distributors.

Some of them sounded pretty good with low distortion (0.1%) when they were played well below clipping where the output power is low. But their spec's showed fairly high distortion (1%) for some of them.
They roll off high frequencies at 15kHz (half power) so they are not "high fidelity".

My home stereo is a Yamaha "natural sound" receiver (that you don't like) and it sounds great. Its distortion is extremely low and it has a very wide bandwidth. It is so good that I don't listen to it and listen to the music instead.
