A time delay relay is a relay that stays on for a certain amount of time once activated. This time delay relay is made up of a simple adjustable timer circuit which controls the actual relay. The time is adjustable from 0 to about 20 seconds with the parts specified. The current capacity of the circuit is only limited by what kind of relay you decide to use.

Description
Substitutions
R111 Meg Pot
R2110 K 1/4 Watt Resistor
C1110uf 25V Electrolytic Capacitor
C210.01uf Ceramic Disc Capacitor
D1,D221N914 Diodes
U11555 Timer IC
RELAY19V Relay
S111A 120V SPST Switch
MISC1Board, Wire, Socket For U1

Notes

  1. R1 adjusts the on time.
  2. You can use a different capacitor for C1 to change the maximum on time.
  3. S1 is used to activate the timing cycle. S1 can be replaced by a NPN transistor so that the circuit may be triggered by a computer, other circuit, etc.

If I use 9V as my input power supply,,,, do I have to change anything else??? And,,, I am not going out to a relay,,, I am going directly to an E-Match,,, to trigger an ejection charge in a model rocket.... But I do want all the power I can get,,, to make sure the charge ignites.. Thanks...

What will happen when 12v is reversed? 555 will fry. Put a 1n4004 in series if that helps. If you want it to work with reverse or forward polarity, put a full wave rectifier on it... reverse or parallel it will function.

Hello: i built this circuit and it works just fine once I realized I needed a "trigger" input. I first had a reed relay as an input and the output stayed on all the time. Once I added an edge triggering circuit (two resistors and a capacitor) the out put stayed on for the time interval I wanted. Thanks for posting this circuit. I found it easy to build and exactly what I needed. Richard

The 555 can sink or source only 200ma, you may have to put a transistor between output pin 3 and the relay.

quote: "hi, i built this circuit it works perfectly when there is no load at the relay, but when i put a load on a relay the circuit works abnormal...pls help me.." maybe the current limit of your power supply is not enough. you can verify this by monitoring the voltage of power supply. decrease on voltage if there is load indicates that the current setting is not enough.

quote: "Hello I have build this circuit but the problem is that there is no delay. if its on it will remain ON and does not turn off. For timed relay action when the entire circuit is powered up, I put a capacitor (10uf) in place of the switch. On power up, the relay swirtches on for 10 seconds then off for as long as the circuit has power. Thanks for the info, the circuit you designed works perfectly. The fact that you would spend the time helping others is what's really good about the Internet.

Hi There, I live in a circa 1989 house that has a time-delay relay box. I'm not really sure why it's there, what the purpose is and if it's in good working order or not. I am not electrically inclined, but do know that it makes an almost continuous buzzing noise that isn't very loud, but definitely noticeable. Any hints you might be able to offer me? Thanks in advance!

Sunday, July 22, 2007 7:46:09 PM
Hello, I have a question and I'm wondering if you guys could help me out. I want to know what do I need to add to my relay or what kind of relay do I need to turn its self on when voltage is 13Volts and up and to turn its self off when its under the 13V. For example: On the car when its off the voltage is about 12V and when you turn it on the voltage is between 13V and 15V depending on the alternator. This relay that I want to install draws 300mA. So basically when the car is off the ralay will be off and when you start the car I want the relay to turn on as the car will produce more then 12Volts. All help would be greatly appreciated.
