Has anyone ever thought (or tried) to build a silencer for a spud gun? I'm thinking of giving it a try, and was wondering if anyone else had done it.

It's the same problem as the silencer for a paint gun (which can be bought commertially).
The projectile (paint ball or potato) is traveling at subsonic speeds, so they are quite quiet.
The propelant (CO2 gas, burnt WD40, whatever) is traveling at supersonic speeds and that is what makes the loud noise.
You need a barrel extension with baffels or vent holes that slows the supersonic gas down before it is vented outside, without interfering too much with your projectile. I'd recommend getting ahold of a silencer for a paint gun and seeing how they do it.

XInventions.com had plans for one, but lately, the webmaster has gotten greedy and now you have to pay for it.

Drill holes in a section of your barrel, then just wrap a towel around it. Secure it with some zip ties

I made one a while ago. It's fairly easy. Just check out howstuffworks.com and copy a normal silencer. That's what I did.

I would say that it reduced sound by 75%.
