Unfortunately, starter motors are only designed for VERY intermittant duty. They have no cooling, and they're completely sealed. Also, they are VERY inefficient, often cheaply made (most contain only bushings, not bearings) and have to be modified to run continuously...Also, since most of them are about 2HP, they draw huge currents (do the math).

However, if you're looking to go fast in the 1/4 mile, then a starter motor will do very well.

Right, right. I didn't think about the brushings.

With cooling an electric motor, would fans be sufficient or cause too much drain on the battery? What else would work in cooling? I'm not planning to run it long, maybe only 5 minutes at a time or so.
Maybe a cooling fan motor would work better, anyway.

I'm not sure about car window motors, but I'm assuming they are brushings and not bearings as well.

To control speed with rather than a 2-speed series controller, what about adjusting the amount of voltage sent to the motor via switching the power on and off very very quickly. It would be much like watching a movie on the theatre, the motor would'nt know the difference and only the average. The slower the pulses, the less voltage the less power and vice versa.

All automotive motors suck. They're cheap, inefficient and just generally crappy. Also, very little cooling.

Cooling a motor means just adding an appropriate fan. Most motors have a fan mounted on the shaft internally, but some rely on an external fan. Really, in a good motor you don't need much cooling because they are very efficient.

As for your controller, check out http://www.aaroncake.net/circuits/motorcon.htm
