I would rather not use a belt clutch, but it seems to be my only choice.. any ideas?

Go to a go-Kart supply shop, ethier in town, or on the internet. They sell clutches with chains for about 25$ depending where you buy.

just a thought... how would I go about using a centrifugal clutch?

I mean, the clutch will not be engaged at idle, but the motor won't start at idle, so to open the throttle enough for the engine to start, it means the clutch would engage...and you can't roll start it cos the clutch won't engage unless the engine shaft is spinning....

sooo....

That's a beast of an engine...

Centrifugal clutch is fine. Most start engaging at around 2300 RPM, which should be well above your starting speed. Some clutches are adjustable.

I've read that for best power transfer, you should select a clutch, so that the idle speed of the motor is 75% of the rpm at which the clutch engages...

http://member.telpacific.com.au/lehane/home.htm

now, I don't know what speed this motor idles at, but I know that if I choose a clutch based on that suggestion, that the speed at which the motor will easily start at is higher than the clutches engaging rpm... soo... I also can't justify the $80 or so dollars for a clutch to go on a free motor :P

You can adjust the idle to almost anything you want, down to about 500 RPM or so.

Don't worry if the clutch slips a little at startup. They all do.

just discovered the motor happily starts at idle... don't know what exactly idle is though, I started it up, adjusted the idle to what I thought it was happy running at, then stopped the engine, and tried starting it at idle... and it does, very easily, especially when warm :p I imagine it won't have any troubles even when cold....
