Unless you're go kart was made of the lightest carbon fibre and completly aerodynamic, no. Weed trimmer engines just don't have the grunt to power a kart. If you have one and want to use it, put it on you're bike. Good for a laugh.

A lot depends on how big the engine is, how much you and the kart weigh and how it's geared. There are china karts that run a 43cc trimmer like motor and they go fast enough for us big kids, a smaller engine would be ok for smaller guys. You could gear the lil snipper motor to increase the torque but the karts overall speed will not be as high. Let us know what engine it is, how much you weigh and what you were thinking of making this thing from.
However i think MC BOB had the right idea, there are guys around me that have snipper power assisted bikes, theyr'e simple to make and you can always pedal home if something goes wrong.

If you really want to make a go kart, find a good 7hp mower or an engine like that. or convert an old turbo into a gas turbine.........

Way too small. Those engines make about 1HP at 14,000 RPM or so.

Its much easier than that mate. Put a stunt peg or a good PVC or ABS plastic roller on the axle of the whipper snipper and have the motor attached to the top of the bike so that the roller is sitting firmly on the rear tyre. The onboard clutch will stop the motor from turning over. Just run the throttle up to the handlebars, whack a start-stop switch on the frame and go chase a granny down the street!

How well would one of these engines work on a motorized scooter (similar to Aaron's)?

Years ago, I found friction drives to be very poor. Any amount of sand or moisture would make them slip, and the wear on the tire was unacceptable.
If you are going to put a trimmer engine on a bike, you need a very high reduction (about 40:1) from the engine to the wheel. This means finding a large sprocket for the back wheel of the bike. But other then that, it's straightforward. Just mount the engine and run the chain.
On a scooter, the small engines are much more viable. You still need a big reduction (20:1 or so), but since you have smaller tires, it doesn't need to be a drastic.
Here's a great scooter site: http://scooters.tziworld.com/

I made my first electric bike using a ratchet on the front wheel, a bit more complex than a friction drive but it was definately worth the effort. In later years it ended up with a 43cc trimmer motor with tuned pipe and running methanol, sounded much like your average motorcross bike, borrrt. http://img118.echo.cx/img118/9279/346a5ho.jpg

when i would put the weed trimmer engine on my bike i put it in the middle of the frame so it would look nice.
i think putting a motor on the front tire would be awkward looking and i dont really like friction drive |

Hmm, i'd like to see how you make the crank clear the engine and what your idea of "nice" looks like, had no idea my bike looked awkward?
