my dad bought me ride on lawnmower for £20(about $40) because the man said he couldnt get it working we got it real cheap. we fixed the engine in a few mins but id like to ask, how could i change the gearing to reach a higher speed?

Depends on the transmission used. If it's just sprockets or pulleys, swap them. If it's a hydrostatic transmission, then I have no idea.

thanks but ive found out how to speed it up, were contacting a lawnmower specialist and were going to find a bigger sprocket for the gearbox. as the sprocket for the gearbox is about 10 times smaller than that of the axle so a lot of speed is lost as a result

you just can't use a lawnmower engine for a go kart. lawnmowers are vertical, go karts are horizontal. You've either got to use a spider gear to change the direction of the force, or some goofy belt system that will wear out quick, or turn the engine on it's side, which doesn't work.

You can turn the engine onto it's side with some modifications...I think I've posted the procedure before so a search for "convert horizontal vertical" should turn it up.

You are saying that that can actually be done! Oooh! That is awesome! I have a 12hp Briggs that is virtcal, but still runs perfect! I'm thinking my scooter will go faster now....

I've done the vertical to horizontal conversion before and it works well. But it does require some of the parts from the horizontal engine to make it work, and it's not "plug and play". A 12HP Briggs should already have a cast iron flywheel but an engine that big might have a pressurized oil system which will be a LOT harder to convert.
