Hello all. This forum is great, google has some answers sometimes, but this is far superior.

I've been playing with my razor for the past few weeks. Like aaron, I always thought it would be cool to motorize one. I found one laying by the side of the street recently and the ideas started to fly.

My planned useage for this is to drive ~1/2 mile to and from my friend's house on weekend nights so I don't have to drink and drive. I figure anyone can just buy stuff, so my rule is I can spend zero dollars. This makes it WAY more fun So far, everything has been 100% free. Below is pictures of what I tested last night. It uses a a/c fan motor from a mitsubishi eclipse. It has two power levels. The buttons on the handles are from the horns in the steering wheel on a eclipse. When one is pressed it was the low power, both got you full power. I used a roller blade wheel on the motor itself, it is attached with some modified washers I found in the basement.

The speeds and everything works great. It just hated hills. I'm just realizing now it is probably because of my near 1:1 ratio. But when it moved on flat surface, it was jogging speed. So if the ratio is adjusted for more tq, it would be walking speed. Kinda lame.








I have a starter motor I'd like to use. I hooked it up to the battery earlier today and it seems to go, well, fast. And I know they have enough torque to make a 3000lb car jump while in gear. My question is this, when the starter gets power, the gear shoots out of the starter to hit the flywheel. How do you go about using one of these if the gear is moving around?

Lol, no interest, eh? I began mounting a weedwacker engine today. Gear ratio is 1:6.4. I'm hoping this is good enough to cruise around.

Still hunting for a geared bike to raid for shifting and braking ;-)

Since you are converting to gas it's a bit too late to answer...

Looks like a good first setup, but there are many improvements. First, ditch the friction drive. With only a few drops of water it will become useless. Also the plastic wheels wear very quickly. Second, use two smaller batteries for a 24V pack. That big car starting battery is way too huge for the distance you need and isn't designed for cycle use. Third, find a better motor. Automotive motors SUCK. Proper scooter motors (with actual bearings, more poles, etc.) are worlds better and will take abuse.

Funny that you also use your scooter to go to the bar. That's the main reason I built mine...48V with a few beers sure is a fun ride home!
