So, ever since we have owned this 87 Camry, it has had a small knock, 4-5 years ago. Yesterday, it has acquired a louder knock. I was driving to work today, and it struggled to get moving on the highway, 50mph. Then, when I slowed as I was getting into town the RPM's suddenly went to 0 and I pulled over. I barely started it as it struggled to keep 500RPM's. I inched it to my work as I could not leave it in it's current spot. It was rattling and banging around under the hood, and when I got to my parking space it puttered and finally died and I pushed it a foot or two into the space.
I know I shouldn't have driven it, but I can't call in sick 30 minutes before my shift and I couldn't get a ride.
It was clearly dying. No previous owners took care of it. My brother and mom didn't take care of it when they were driving it. I still feel like I killed it.
What was wrong with it?

If you don't have the time to do it right, when will you have the time to do it over? |

Thrown rod. Can you remove a piston from the bottom end? |

If you've thrown a rod then there are more pressing concerns. The block probably needs to be machined. |

I think it might be the thing that holds the rod in place and probably some bearings somewhere. |

A tutorial on machining an engine block and rebuilding a piston engine? Not likely. Google it? If you have thrown a rod and damaged a bearing, the block needs to be sent out to a machine shop for repair. Or just replace the engine. |
