In any amount of paint work, prep is 99% of the job. The whole vehicle needs to be wet sanded with approx. 300 grit paper to break any existing clear coat, remove small imperfections and provide a tooth for the paint to adhere. Any dents, dings and rust must be repaired and then primed.
Paint in long even strokes with a 50% overlap. Metallic colours are quite difficult to lay down so stick with solid colours unless you have done this before. Follow the instructions on the can for re coat. If you are radically changing the colour, it is probably necessary to use a sealer first.
Before clear coating, wet sand the whole car. This is a BIG DEAL and is what will make the paint job work. You can paint with any method you choose as long as you do a good wet sanding job. Start at 500 grit, then move up to 1000, then 2000. Now lay down your clear. Yes, there are many clear coats available in a can. Off hand, Eastwood sells an actual catalyzed clear in a rattle can. |
