I've just finished constructing a stereo amplifier to give me decent sound from my TV and DVD player. It's built around the TDA2004 2x10W class B stereo amp chip and it worked fine on the breadboard. I'm now in the process of mounting everything onto copper strip board and have a neat little enclosure ready to finish it off. I'm taking pitures of the construction along the way and I'd be very happy to submit the circuit with construction comments and pictures if anyone's interested. |

The datasheet for the TDA2004 has a detailed schematic and a pcb design. Its output is only 2.2 Watts into an 8 ohm speaker at clipping with a 12.0V supply. It is designed to drive a 2 ohm speaker at 10 Watts when the clipping distortion is an awful 10% and the supply is 14.4V. |

Well thanks for that encouraging response. You know, I have a friend who has thousands of poundsworth of stereo equipment. His speaker cables alone cost him more than my whole stereo set up. When I go to his house he puts some music on and spends the whole evening talking about his equipment, how good it is, how much it cost him. He can reel off all his equipment's specifications, bandwidths, THD specs, you name it he's got it all at his fingertips and he just wants to tell you about it - all evening. He's lost the point of it - he's not listening to the music he's listening to the equipment. I expected better when I signed up here than to get more of that. My TDA2004 amp works just fine. It gives me great sound in my living room because I'm listening to the audio not to a TDA2004. I'm out of here. |

I'm replying because I think he'll be back to at least read this.
Peter, I really don't think you are resonating with us. I think I speak for Audioguru as well as myself when it comes to sound quality. Sure you may think that your system sounds good, to you, but the facts are what Audioguru mentioned in his post. "We are Audiophiles". We not only like our music and other stuff we listen to sound good, but we also want High Fidelity as well. I'm sure if you are capable of making your own amplifier you should be able to realize what exactly an "ideal" amplifier is supposed to do. The goal is to design an ideal amplifier, which means no distortion (very low distortion in reality) just to mention one thing.
We do listen to our equipment so that is why I think you aren't on the same page as us. I don't understand why you would think people like us would not do that. I'm mean a shitty little clock radio might sound good... to my Mum (Mom) but I would run to the bathroom throw up my last meal if I had to listen to that kind of crappy sound quality. Now I'm not saying your amplifier would sound like that but I hope you get the point I'm making.
EDIT: Oh yeah I forgot. Please do post your designs here. Even if we are not impressed, don't be ashamed. You could be 10 years old for all I know so you still have much to learn and we might be able to help. Non-offensive tempers are allowed here, but they won't get you anywhere. However an open mind, as well as accepting criticism and improving you knowledge and problem solving skills will get you somewhere. It has served me well so far. |

I can't find a way to de-register from this web site, so I should be most grateful if someone could remove my user name and password for me since I won't be returning after this post. I've joined another hobby electronics web site on whose forum I've received a warm and friendly welcome as a new member and whose subscribers seem genuinely interested in each other's projects, designs and methods irrespective of their uses or apparent merit.
Goodby, and I'm 70 years old by the way. |

Oh well I tried. You reactions seem rather irrational in my opinion. I'm sure Aaron will remove your account the same way he does with spammers. Maybe you don't want the name "Peter B" on this forum as Google would link to it after some time and you may only want that name to be associated with your new account on that other forum. Now since that might be the case here the decision to remove your account is illogical as we can track your forum actions online via your account name which will probably still be "Peter B". The reason why I think this is because I use wasssup1990 as my account name pretty much everywhere and it is rather unique and so it is very easy to track. I chose this user name about 10 years ago. Food for thought.
Why did I write all of this? Because I'm in the mood. I gotta take a break from all the Uni work. |

Hey, website owner here...
I don't see what audioguru said that can be possibly taken as negative. All he did was inform you that the IC you have chosen has some fairly terrible distortion, possibly saving you from creating an amp that you weren't happy with. If you are happy with it, then that's fine as well.
Remember: there is no emotion in typing, and the only way to communicate is through the literal meaning of text. It is natural for people to take text in the negative, when in reality they should always assume positive. I think if you stick around a while and look at things from a more positive perspective, you will find a good community.
Otherwise, say the word and I will delete your account if you really want me to. |

Actually, the IC has pretty low distortion when it is not clipping. But its power is spec'd with its volume control cranked up way more than clipping to make the power number higher. Also its power supply voltage (14.4V) is very high for its power rating. Also it is spec'd with a 2 ohm load which again makes the power number higher.
An extremely distorted square-wave (due to very much clipping) produces double the power of a sine-wave that is barely clipping. It is called "Peak Power".
I also informed him that the "10W" amplifier IC usually produces only 2.2W before clipping when the distortion is very low. In a little clock radio the 2.2W would sound great. My computer speakers produce only about 3.6W each with very low distortion or 7.2W each at full blast.
I like listening to music. But a horrible-sounding sound system distracts me because I know that the sound can be much better and I think of all the ways to fix the poor quality sound.
Maybe Peter B is upset because we know that the TDA2004 IC is very old and there are hundreds of projects with it on the internet (that he simply copied?). |

I haven't replied because I had no intention of returning, but having thought about it a bit I thought that copying and pasting the response I got from the other site I signed up to might be revealing. This is it in response to exactly the same post as I started with here:
Welcome Peter, we are always glad to have new people sign up and we look forward to you posting your projects here. Your TDA2004 project is interesting. You may already know that the TDA2004 has been around for quite a while, and that it has a pretty bad press. There are several TDA2004 projects listed here, but none so far that have been designed for domestic use and we will be interested to know how you are powering your amplifier if not from a car battery. So we would be pleased to see your project details and are sure it will attract a lot of comment.
Now that's what I call a friendly, encouraging response to a new member. Someone above mentioned criticism. Well at my age, I have taken all and given all that there is, but with the emphasis on constructive. Dismissive criticism is neither helpful nor polite and I have no time for it, which is why this web site is not for me and why I would like my details to be removed, so I should be grateful if someone could do it now beacuase this is definitely my last log on here. |

You have the ability to remove your details yourself as well as remove this whole thread. It is left to Aaron to remove your account. I still don't see how someone could get so worked up over something like this. |

FYI Peter B. I just realized that you posted a section of a response you got from your other forum on this forum. You shouldn't have done that if you don't want any of us to track you to where that was posted. Google can be your worst enemy sometimes. This thread turned up on Google not long after it was created. Given enough time your forum with that quote you posted will also show up in Google given certain conditions are met, and if you didn't fabricate that response you apparently received. |

Peter's account has been deleted per request. I agree, his reaction was odd and doesn't make sense to me. I know that nothing posted on a forum is ever to be taken as negative by default, because text is incapable of communicating emotions and always looks cold. |

Some people give "a warm and friendly greeting" to a nOOby. But usually it is just some text that was saved in Notepad and is not actually a warm greeting. I don't doo dat. I don't think I will start giving "a warm and friendly greeting" from Notepad. When somebody posts an old and common project then I just say the facts. |

Yeah I thought that quote he posted looked manufactured. |
