I am doing some minor transmission work on my 94 Saturn SL2 and one place I need to access has an inconvenient strut in the way. I am told if I remove the 2 large bolts on the bottom of the strut near the brake disc and the three on the top in the engine bay the spring will pop out and serious injury can occur.
I don't want to remove the spring for cutting (those people need to be taken out of the gene pool) I just need take it out, and put it back in later.
Doesn't the strut just come out in one assembly? I'm 98% sure it does. |
If you don't have the time to do it right, when will you have the time to do it over? |

It should come out as an assembly if it is a MacPherson type. The lower spring perch will be welded to the strut, then the top of the spring will hold against the bearing plate. If you remove the bolts that secure the bearing plate to the shock tower, leaving the bolt that secures the bearing plate to the shock, the strut should come out as an assembly.
Or borrow a spring compressor from the local auto parts store just to be sure. |
