as im sure many have noticed...my "uninformed" nature of other posts...i also dont know much about cars... and my car is really starting to crap out on me... for 1, this certain model of later 90s jetta has a "locked" or "sealed" transmission..which makes it very difficult to check it regularly... its having problems shifting/accelerating... and makes really strange noises...sorting from the constant common "rumble"..to a grinding sort of noise from...under the car?-usually when around 30mph or so?...

i should just take it to the shop, but i know alot of people out there are like "really" into cars, and maybe someone can relate to some of these problems and give me a head up... in any case- thanks for reading!

Noises can be difficult to diagnose since there are so many causes. Generally, speed sensitive noises are attributed to the drivetrain. Most likely a bearing or CV joint.

Lift the car safely on ramps or jackstands, then get under the car and try to rip the axel shafts off. If you find any movement, then they are worn. Do the same thing with each wheel. Lift up that corner of the car, and then try to rip the wheel off. It should not rock or move. If it does, the bearing is bad. Wheel bearings are the most common cause for a growling noise.

Muffler noises are usually different then drivetrain noises. An exhaust leak will sound like a hissing, ticking or a louder engine noise.

Most cars these days have two or more mufflers because people want a quiet car.
