This inverter circuit can provide up to 800mA of 12V power from a 6V supply. For example, you could run 12V car accessories in a 6V (British?) car. The circuit is simple, about 75% efficient and quite useful. By changing just a few components, you can also modify it for different voltages.

Notes

  1. L1 is a custom inductor wound with about 80 turns of 0.5mm magnet wire around a toroidal core with a 40mm outside diameter.
  2. Different values of D3 can be used to get different output voltages from about 0.6V to around 30V. Note that at higher voltages the circuit might not perform as well and may not produce as much current. You may also need to use a larger C3 for higher voltages and/or higher currents.
  3. You can use a larger value for C3 to provide better filtering.
  4. The circuit will require about 2A from the 6V supply to provide the full 800mA at 12V.

ok...I have a question, I have a specific project that I need to make a HV (100-120Vdc) from a120vac -500 watt power supply. I can get the 100vdc threw a full wave bridge rectifier...but not stable at all. I need extramely low amps...no more than 3, but would like to maintain 100-120VDC out for motor use. Can anyone help me here? Send me an email directly...Thanks

Aleksander, Wook is right. You can't build that circuit. Even if you did change out the inductor it would be impossible. 10Vdc * 20mA =0.2Watts for the input. 12Vdc * 0.36A = 4.32 Watts. for output. Output power cannot be greater than input power. An input of 10Vdc converter at 20mA outputting 12Vdc can output at the very most, 16.7mA. And that is with 100% efficiency. Realistically you can output maybe 13mA. Also, this circuit is not called an inverter. Inverters take a DC voltage and convert it to AC, so I don't know why it is named inverter. The correct name would be a Boost DC Converter.

we have a '53 chevy truck w/ 6 V system is there a way we can boost this to 12V @10Amp? or can u build us one? we will pay a reasonable amount for one of these we want to put a 12V rodio into this truck. thanks in advance

Is there anyone who can tell me how to wind the custom made inductor of 80 turns, 0.5mm magnet wire on a 40mm toroidal core, for the 6V to 12V converter? Thanks for ur guidance :)

Thanks for the useful info. I have an old 1930's Harley at 6v and I need to mount a GPS unit to the frame. They all require +12v. Does anybody make a commercial 6v -> 12v converter or sell the parts kit mentioned above?

Aleksandar, Your request is not possible to accomplish. You would have to supply much higher current from the lower voltages. If the boost circuit were 85% efficient, in order to output 12v @ 360mA, then: at 10v in, you would need 509mA current at 5v in, you would need 735mA current The inductor L1 would need to be changed for the different voltage levels.
